<ReNoM> I'm administrator of Russian Wesnoth Community site. We think last versions of Wesnoth includes only visual and convenience updates. Why developers don't make any gameplay updates? Thanks.
<zookeeper> ReNoM, well, the core gameplay is so solid and established that we're not really doing any substantial changes to that, and even minor changes are pretty rare.
<zookeeper> as for changes and additions to campaigns and individual scenarios, that's mostly because there's not many people around these days with the time and inclination to do that sort of improvements.
<fabi> ReNoM: What kind of updates do you like to see?
<ReNoM> zookeeper, for example, many players want to see something like battle.net on official server. e.g. integrate ladder-rating in game. This especially actually after we have two ladders (wesnoth.gamingladder.info and www.lddr.pl
). May be it's some new type of game? You can see, only in Russia we have big interest to 1vs1 (PvP) matchups. We organize tournaments for Russian-speaking users, and to develop Wesnoth tournament engine writed on php - http://tour.wesnothlife.ru/?lang=english

<fabi> ReNoM: Maybe you search for nice and well made maps on the addon server, then suggest them for mainline inclusion on the forum.

<fabi> ReNoM: Yes, we still plan to add the Khalifate after the last balance problems are solved.
<fabi> ReNoM: But don't expect much more factions added to the default era, adding more factions makes balancing more and more difficult.
<fabi> ReNoM: But we could add another era beside the default and age of heroes, if there are any well made ones out there.
<fabi> Also, you might be happy to hear that there is a new type of addon in the development version, "MP modification". It can be used to introduce different gameplay mechanics.
<ReNoM> fabi, when we played PvP games, we find some problems in balance. Loyalist is more powerful than other factions. Knalgan Alliance in 75% games wins Undead (you should to spam units with impact for making imbalance Knalgan Alliance in this matchup). And some other examples...

<fabi> ReNoM: About the ladder support. We have an ancient paradigm that says everything competitive would harm the nice atmosphere of the community. That is why ladder support and rating system for addons are denied since ages. My personal opinion is that this paradigm is rather silly especially for a game that focus on war. Maybe we can delete this paradigm in the future with more and more new developers joining the project.
<fabi> ReNoM: Just adding support for ladders but disabling it on our main server would allow you to have your own one with ladder support for example.
<ReNoM> fabi, may be it's true. But you can make rating system optional. For example, flagging games when creating, such as - "Game for rating.". Unofficial ladder games we play on similar principle, but by hand.
<ReNoM> fabi, it's really good idea. But most Wesnoth developer is work in mainline. And it's most possible to implement in mainline
